Week 4 Activity 3 – Create an Educational Graphic Using Layers

This is a series of images that I created to teach the significance of the number ‘e’. I used Graphic for Mac, created the base image and then added layers with different colored parts. By showing and hiding different layers, I exported a series of images which I put into a slideshow to show the progression.

  1. Hi Kaz,

You’re definitely a math person! I’m wondering how the education system in Japan compares to Canada? I like the layering to show the progression. Is Graphic for Mac fairly user friendly? I’m thinking a little bit more text could help define some of the layers as if you’re not a math person (or haven’t dealt with ‘e’ in quite some time like me!) this could be slightly difficult to interpret. Looking forward to working with you.

    1. Hi Markku,

Thanks for the comment. The international school I teach is very similar to schools back home in Canada. Everything is in English and there are students from many different cultural backgrounds.
I find Graphic for Mac to be very intuitive and user friendly. I bought it when it was on sale and use it for almost all the graphics I create.
Good point about the lack of text. I usually create the graphics and then import them into Keynote to add the text that supports the diagrams. I didn’t upload the final Keynote slides but you’re right, it cannot be understood without some sort of explanation. Thanks for the feedback.

  2. Kaz,
Using layers in graphing is a great idea. I find my students can create graphs but always forget the axis titles and overall titles. I think using a layered diagram and then maybe turning into a GIF might help remind students.

    1. Hi Abbi,

Ah, a GIF is a good idea. I don’t have any experience creating GIFs actually. Do you know an easy way to make one if I have a series of images?
